Earth Day Weekend in NYC: Walk, Bike & Explore a Car-Free Manhattan

April 25th is turning the city into a playground — and you're invited.

Every April, New York City does something magical: it hands its streets back to the people. On Saturday, April 25th, cars disappear from dozens of blocks across all five boroughs, and Manhattan becomes a giant open-air celebration. If you've ever wanted to stroll down the middle of Broadway without a yellow cab honking at you, this is your moment.

Broadway Goes Car-Free — Right Outside Our Door

From 17th Street all the way to 46th Street, Broadway transforms into a car-free corridor from 10am to 4pm. That means no traffic, no noise — just people walking, cycling, dancing, and breathing in a version of Manhattan you rarely get to experience.

American Dream Hostel sits right in Gramercy, steps from where the action begins. You won't need a subway, an Uber, or even a plan — just walk out the front door and you're already there.

Why go:

  • Completely free, open to everyone

  • Live music, public art installations, and environmental programming along the route

  • One of those "only in New York" moments you'll actually remember

Free Citi Bike Rides All Day 🚲

Thanks to Lyft, Citi Bike is offering unlimited free 30-minute rides on classic bikes for the entire day. That means you can hop on a bike, cruise down car-free Broadway, lock it up, explore on foot, and grab another bike whenever you want — all for free.

Tips for using Citi Bike on Earth Day:

  • Download the Citi Bike app before the event

  • Dock your bike every 30 minutes to reset your free ride

  • Stations are everywhere in Gramercy and Flatiron — easy to find

Art, Music & Environmental Programming

This year's Car-Free Earth Day features two special art installations commissioned by NYC DOT:

The Plastic Sea by artist Frahydel Falczuk — a large-scale immersive piece exploring ocean plastic waste. You can actually participate by weaving colorful strips of plastic into the installation.

An Indicating Cycle by Duy Hoàng — a sculptural book highlighting climate-sensitive species and what their survival tells us about our environment.

Plus live performances, sustainability workshops, and free community programming at locations across all five boroughs.

Make a Full Weekend of It

Earth Day falls on Wednesday, April 22nd — so why not make it a full long weekend in NYC? April is one of the best times to visit: the weather is mild, the parks are blooming, and the city is alive.

Weekend ideas from Gramercy:

  • Walk the High Line on Friday (free, stunning views)

  • Visit Madison Square Park — free guided history tours available on select dates

  • Grab breakfast at the hostel, then bike down car-free Broadway on Saturday

  • End the day at a rooftop bar in the Flatiron District
